Purdue Pharma, makers of OxyContin, the powerful prescription painkiller that experts say helped touch off an opioid epidemic, will plead guilty to three federal criminal charges including a settlement of more than $8 billion, according to The US Justice Department.

The company is also expected to file for bankruptcy protection, however, the deal does not acquit the Sakler family nor other executives from crimes or accountability. There is a continuing investigation.
